The Finnish independence day is the 6th of December. Finland became independent 1917 after periods of domination by the Swedes and Russians. For this occasion, there is a ball in the Presidential Palace (Presidentinlinna), to which around 2000 guest (politicians, diplomats, artists, war veterans, etc…) are invited. Around 40% of the population follows the ball on TV. Finnish flags are shown all over the place and after last light it’s a tradition to put two candles on the edge of the home window. |
