SANTA LUCIA

The Lucia tradition comes from Sweden and is celebrated by the Swedish speaking minority in Finland.

The celebration remembers the holy Lucia who died on the 13th December 304. According to Nordic tradition, all the farming work had to be done before Lucia’s night and the beginning of the winter.

The first Lucia was Barbro Wallgren 1950, since then a young girl is elected every year by the public to be Lucia and becomes her crown in the Cathedral of Helsinki on the 13th December.
