1) Every letter is pronounced (thus a double letter is 'long')

 

2) The stress is always on the first syllable

 

 

b, c, f, q, w, z come from foreign languages and are pronounced the same

 

k, n, p, t, v as in English

 

d as in "ready" (sometimes very weak)

 

g (only found after n) as in "singer"

 

h as in "hot" whatever is position

 

j as in "you"

 

l as in "let"

 

r always rolled

 

s always as in "set"

 

a as in "car"

 

e like a French é (café)

 

i as in "pin"

 

o like aw in "law" or "coat"

 

u like oo in pool

 

y like "u" in French or "ü" in German

 

ä as in "hat"

 

ö like the u in "fur"
